This is one of the most common questions that we get asked. MajesticSEO is not like other link maps out there, because we KEEP data about dead links for all time. We personally think that’s particularly valuable, but there is no need for you to focus on the dead ones if you do not wish to.

There are several ways to get more robust data. Most links that no longer exist are ones that we crawled years ago and because they were just so insignificant, our crawler simply never made it back there. But if you want links that we have verified in say the last three or six months, then all you need to do is to go into the options panel of advanced reports and make a few changes to the filtering.

About half way down the options, you will see the ability to filter the results so that you ONLY see links that we have crawled or re-crawled within a certain date range. I would suggest that you look at a 90-120 period to get a good spread with a moderately large site.

But before you click “save and force new analysis” to reset the dates, you should also make sure that you have excluded links that you do not want, in the flags further down the screen:

Ticking these tow boxes at the very least will be necessary to remove “false positives” if you only want living links. The “deleted” flag will remove URLS that we know no longer exist from your results and removing the “mentions” will also take out instances where the website was referred to on a page, but no physical link exists.

I hope this helps. In addition, you can look at the fresh crawl data to get information about links found between index updates.

I think being able to see lost or dropped links is a very useful feature, analysing what has happened in the past can help if a domain has a problem.

I by default exclude deleted, alt text and mentions, however i will on occasion include them, if you have massive amounts of lost links then it should raise the question why.

    Hi,

it would be very nice if the free backlink checker (on the front page) would show only the backlinks crawled in the last 3-6 months.

Because now the numbers of the free checker is inflated big time.

    Hi Bence,

We will look into providing backlink counts from recently checked links shortly, I’d just like to say that our current counts are not “inflated” – they are actual counts from data based on our complete database that goes back 4 years.
