We scanned millions of websites to find out who was talking about X (formerly Twitter) over the past 12 months. By analysing over 300 billion web pages, we’ve been able to see who links to status updates on the twitter.com and x.com domains. This gives us a unique view on the most reported Tweets/Posts of 2024 across the web.
It’s fair to say that some accounts attract more attention than others, in fact, you could probably immediately guess at least four of the accounts responsible for the most linked-to posts. So it should come as little surprise that a number of handles have more than one post in our list of top Tweets. To compensate for these “whales,” we’ve focused on ten personalities behind the most reported Tweets of 2024.
Note: While the official verbiage has long-changed, the word “post” has a few different meanings that caused some problems in an early draft. To avoid ambiguity, we’re going to use the older term, and (mostly) refer to account updates as “Tweets” throughout this article.
Read on to discover the tech founders, politicians, royalty and other public figures who received extensive coverage of their social media output in 2024.
Top Ten Handles
1. @JoeBiden
It may come as a surprise that President Biden has two tweets in the top ten. The most reported tweet of 2024 was Joe Biden’s announcement of his decision to retire after completion of his first term in office. It received over 400 million views, and was linked to from over 4,700 websites.
President Biden’s second most reported Tweet was also ranked number two in our list. It was his subsequent endorsement of Kamala Harris.
2. @elonmusk
Multibillionaire owner of Twitter, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla. Like Joe Biden, Elon Musk has two tweets in the top ten, coming in at positions 3 and 5. His first, was his reaction to the assassination attempt of President Trump from July.
The second tweet was from the start of 2024, and was an announcement of a critical milestone in the Neuralink project.
Neuralinks own top tweet came in at position 29. Their tweet centred around a video interview of their first human recipient.
3. @George_Kurtz
If the name “George Kurtz” doesn’t ring any bells, maybe you remember “CrowdStrike” from July’s news?
George is the founder and CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, who found itself in the media spotlight in July when around 8.5 million IT systems crashed worldwide.
The incident, and response drew a great deal of global media attention, leading to George Kurtz landing the fourth most reported Tweet in our table.
4. @KensingtonRoyal
The official twitter handle of The Prince and Princess of Wales. The tweet that places the Royals in the top ten was a heart-felt message from Catherine, the Princess of Wales, following her recovery from abdominal surgery, and commencement of preventative chemotherapy.
The account’s second-most reported tweet surrounded controversy where a photo of her family was withdrawn by the Associated Press. After hours of speculation regarding image manipulation, the Princess confirmed and apologised that she had edited the picture. Full report on this story available on PolitiFact.
5. @TheRealOJ32
O.J. Simpson was a controversial former sportsman and actor. His family used his account to share the news that he had passed away on April 10th 2024. .
This tweet was reported on from over 2000 websites. 2180 by our data. Sites referencing the tweet include Biography.com, ESPN and The Associated Press.
6. @charli_xcx
Born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, on August 2nd, 1992, Charli XCX is an English singer and songwriter.
Her tweet, “kamala is brat,” appears to refer to Kamala Harris, and “brat” – the title of the singers sixth studio album.
We can only assume this slightly cryptic message is some manner of endorsement. Articles in publications who should be authorities on such matters like NME and Paper magazine appear to support this hypothesis. For those still trying to get their head around the brat phenomenon, Charli’s video for “360” is most likely Not Safe For Work, but available on Youtube, for the curious.
7. @TheRoaringKitty
A high entry for a Youtuber. The Roaring Kitty discusses stocks and shares trading as a form of entertainment. Their message, showing a gamer move from “passive” to “fully-concentrating” mode was the ninth most linked-to tweet of the year.
So why the interest?
Writing for Financial Information platform, finimize, analyst Russell Burns provided an explanation. This Tweet marked TheRoaringKitty’s return to publishing on the platform after a three-year period of absence. The reason for the handles fame? Russell explains, “The Roaring Kitty was a central player in the so-called meme stock frenzy, widely credited for sparking the GameStop stock surge in late 2020.”
8. @RafaelNadal
We’ll avoid the temptation to produce a Venn Diagram illustrating populations that recognise both “Rafael Nadal” and “Charli XCX”. For those of you who don’t know, Rafael Nadal is one of the most highly accomplished tennis players of all time. To say he “ranked number one in the world for a while” would be an understatement.
Rafa’s entry in the top Tweets list was a video that explained his intent to retire after the 2024 Davis Cup.
9. @sama
This is the twitter handle of OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman. Sam has the shortest tweet of the top ten authors in this list, containing just three letters, “her”
This may seem a little random. However, “Her” is a title of a movie featuring Scarlett Johansson as the voice of an AI assistant.
Suggesting that Sam had been a fan of the film to the extent where he wanted to use the actresses’ voice as an AI Assistant, The Verge reported on the subsequent controversy. Johansson claimed that while she declined the offer from Altman, the “Sky” voice of ChatGPT still sounded eerily similar to her own.
10. @KamalaHQ
Rounding off the top ten is the official handle of the Kamala Harris Presidential election campaign.
It features a quote and video from Tim Walz, Kamala’s running mate about gun violence and gun control in the US.
Data & Methodology
It’s no secret that it is now far harder to extract any kind of meaningful data from X (formerly Twitter).
In early 2023, the company announced significant changes to API policy . This made it much more difficult for third party tools to work with the platform.
So how did we compile this data?
Majestic maps the information architecture of the world wide web. In a similar manner to search engines, we crawl billions of web pages a day. Instead of using the data to power a consumer-level search (like Google, or Bing), Majestic instead delivers a B2B specialist search product, primarily aimed at digital marketers and SEO specialists who find immense value in knowing who-links-to-who.
To discover the top tweets, instead of looking to Twitter/X, we turned the problem on its head. We can’t examine the social output on the platform itself, so instead turned our eyes to the rest of the web. We were able to extract a list of web pages and sites that link to tweets on x.com and those domains that still link to the twitter.com address. From then it was a relatively straightforward task to count the popularity of each post, based on the number of websites that linked to it. No crawling of Twitter/X was required to produce this study.
It’s worth noting that the measure used (Referring Domain count) is a measure that is vulnerable to manipulation. Unlike more refined measures, it treats the influence of a major press publication as equivalent to a personal blog. Majestic offer a range of solutions to facilitate more refined analysis.
