Majestic has been able to extend the period covered by the Fresh Index to cover links seen over a 90 day period, rather than a 45 days period. This gives you more flexibility in several area of the system.
For example, you can now visualize New and Lost links by day over a quarter 90 days (Note that due to the memory effect, there is still a weighting at the start of this chart – see the on page help for more about this.)
You will also see the other Fresh charts updating – reflecting the increased depth of the Fresh index dates. For example the Backlink History data now has more meaning when viewed in Fresh mode, as the duration is long enough to show something meaningful:
You will also find 90 days on the general summary charts. Over the next few few weeks we should be able to make this chart’s dateline a little less cluttered – but we felt you would like the data right now and you can always export to Excel if you would like to change the layout:
A Bit more about How and Why
This came out of client requests – reflecting their desire for us to show more and more of our data within the Fresh Index. This particular update will indeed show more links in the Fresh Index – but the difference is actually links we already knew about, but had discounted from the Fresh Index because they had not themselves generated enough links to get re-crawled on a regular basis. This change gives links a little longer to create a lasting impression – although many will get deleted – usually by being relegated from a blog’s homepage – way before the 90 days are up. In these cases, we of course mark these as deleted when we next check the page.

The 90 days is a useful addition when carrying out competitor analysis, and I especially like the ‘domain flow metrics’ attribute.

So if I understand correctly, the Fresh index is more relevant to SEO? For example, if I am looking at purchasing a domain and I want to know what the link equity is like, in order to get a reflection of the current state I should be using the Fresh Index instead of Historic? Is that correct?
February 15, 2013 at 4:30 amIt depends on what aspect of a domain’s history you value, but basically, if we haven’t seen a link within a 90 day period, it is most likely not a very good link any more.
