Now Majestic has been able to rank the to 70 Million Twitter profiles based on how influential they are. You can download the top 50,000 for free.
Ever wondered who’s more influential on TWITTER, Lady Gaga or Barack Obama? Well as of today, Majestic thinks it is Obama…. just about:
Even though Lady Gaga has some 4 million MORE followers (and follows half a million LESS), Majestic’s Trust Flow takes a very different look at the trust associated with any URL, including a Twitter profile. As such, it can can a differnet – somewhat deeper – view as to the influence of a Twitter handle. But a Twitter handle does not have to be a person. It could be a brand, a cause, or even a technology.
Trust Flow is not the ONLY factor affecting influence on Twitter. There are a number of other signals that Majestic can look at without relying on third party data. Majestic SEO worked on some research by Jabez LeBret for a recent FORBES article, looking for other signals, independent of Twitter itself, that might differentiate an influential handle from a spammy or insignificant one. In the process we found that of all the Twitter handles that exist, websites had only linked with any authority to about 70 Million of them, Now that’s quite a lot – but for the rest of us, we are clearly no more than spectators in the crowd. Nobody takes our input seriously enough to link to us.

You cannot get an Advanced Link Report for Twitter
Some sites are just TOO LARGE for us to be able to give you all the link data. Not that 26 BILLION back-links is something that you are likely to be able to download to your shiny new Excel! However, we were able to run a serious of programs over our Twitter data over the summer to extract the equivalent of our Bulk Back-link checker for all handle URLs that we knew about on Twitter that had any kind of link love (either external links or links from within Twitter itself).
So how can Majestic SEO Rank Twitter Handles?
We have a number of factors. Trust Flow is only a score from 0-100 – so we need more than that. We also know that the ration of Trust Flow to Citation Flow is also a measureable quality signal, Something that has been shown statistically internally and by third parties. We also have some published research regarding IP counts vs Subnet counts as a quality signal. This has been enough to give us a fairly powerful list, although we found an unexpected winner in top place.
How on earth is Joomla more powerful than Obama!?
Yes – although Lady Gaga and Barack Obama appear in our top five Twitter profiles, we were surprised to see Joomla at the top of our list! We were thinking of fettling the results, but then we considered the evidence. The absolute truth is that there are an awful lot of Joomla based websites out there. There are probably more WordPress ones… but Joomla does a stronger job of influencing Twitter through its platform. And why not? Few of us would say that Google’s technology wasn’t affecting our lives, regardless of any individual within it. If they chose to push everyone towards their Twitter profile, I’m sure they would pop from position 14 up to position 1. Indeed, YouTube makes the top five and I think that’s fair.
The really interesting thing about this list is that there is a huge variety of types influencers, but as Jabrez Labret points out in his article, “influence” indeed comes in many forms!
I like that we find Wikileaks vying for the top 10 with the NY Times! Is this fair? Well on Twitter I would say yes. The NY Times has many other ways to “voice” its influence beyond Twitter, whereas Wikileaks uses Twitter as its primary propoganda vehicle.
Technology companies have the edge on Twitter – with Mashable up at number 8. Non- technologists might be surprised, until you look at just HOW MUCH traffic Mashable generates. Enough to wield some influence, suggestion reinforced by their 3.5 million followers.
There are some other reasons for some unusual rankings here, such as twitter’s home page randomly linking to Twitter handles at the point at which we crawl – which goes to show that this is in part a transitary list. Nevertheless, it’s potential value cannot be underestimated. Knowing WHO the influencers are on Twitter is hard at scale! Once you know a handle exists, you can check – and technologies like Klout help that process – but manipulating Klout and manipulating your link profile are two quite different things!
How do I get my hands on the full list?
We are giving you the top 50,000 as of the point when we ran the research over here. Unfortunately, giving out the top 70 million is a bit of a Big Data distribution problem. We are open to suggestions – as long as they don’t involve us giving the data away fro free or selling it exclusively to a single party. Contact sales with your thoughts.

What else can Majestic do with Twitter data?
Glad you asked! If you haven’t realized that Majestic SEO’s data is about a LOT more than simply manipulating Google yet, you are about to be in for quite a shock, to be honest. But in the meantime, we recently showed how you could use our new Wildcard functionality to see the top tweet for any Twitter handle.
We also internally have a tracking report, to track our own Twitter profile over time, along with those of other companies of interest to us. You could do that too, on any paid plan at Majestic. Given that we start at less than US$ 50 a month, that’s really a very powerful data set for you to have at your finger tips.
