In the past couple of years, we have used our data to try predicting political events such as the 2012 US elections and the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. However, this time we are going to look at the New Zealand flag referendum.
The current flag has been the national flag for the last 103 years however in that time, there have been calls for a change and finally this year, the New Zealand government announced that they will hold 2 referendums. The first referendum was held last November, the people of New Zealand were asked “If the New Zealand flag changes, which flag would you prefer?”. The second referendum will be held later this year in March, where voters will be asked to choose between the current New Zealand flag and the alternative design which won the first referendum.
Using our data, there was some interesting findings from the referendum’s official website. For example, the gallery on the site has about twice as many links as the homepage.
Does a picture tell a 1000 words? Well this graph supports that argument as it shows individuals are definitely interested in this topic and thus likely to vote. The amber line indicates that more people are interested in the different flag debate than the homepage of the referendum. Will New Zealand stick to tradition or go for something new?
